Ed was a Maryland native who was born in Cumberland, grew up in College Park and attended the University of Maryland. After graduation he joined the Air Force as a second lieutenant and served in Korea.

He started two companies, one a publishing company which published magazines and coupon flyers for military families, and the other an information technology company which collected and analyzed scanner data from retailers, primarily military commissaries.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Loretta M. Downey and by his children from a former marriage Lynda Henderson and Lisa Merriam, and by his grandchildren Kyle Henderson, Kaitlyn Henderson, Lucy Merriam and Joe Merriam.

Ed  died surrounded by family and friends at his home from liposarcoma.

A memorial service was held at the University of Maryland Chapel at 11:00am on Thursday June 18, 2015.
